Mazda Motor Corp. is preparing to recall 109,000 of its 2001-2004 model Tribute small SUVs to fix frames that could rust and cause major steering problems.
The campaign follows a recall announced earlier this month of 385,800 Ford Escape SUVs for the same problem. Both models share the same platform.
The two recalls cover vehicles sold or registered in Washington, D.C., and 20 snowbelt states where salt is used to clear winter roads.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says corrosion could cause a lower control arm in the front suspension to detach, causing a significant loss of steering control. Dealers will install a new reinforcement cross brace to fix the problem.
Mazda expects to begin its recall this summer when parts become available.
