Mazda Motor Corp. is expanding two previous recalls in the U.S. to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode when triggered in a crash, spraying shrapnel into the passenger compartment.

The larger campaign targets 444,900 driver-side airbags in 2003-2008 model Mazda6 sedans and 2004-2008 RX-8 sports cars. Mazda plans to begin the broadened callback in late July. Some of the cars will have previously replaced inflators replaced again.

The second campaign will replace passenger-side airbags in 27,100 of the company's 2004-2006 Mazda B-series light-duty pickup trucks. The recall includes a smaller sample of the trucks recalled previously for the same problem.

Separately, Mazda also is widening an earlier Takata inflator recall in Japan to 75,000 vehicles from the original 38,000 units. The company says it has now recalled 811,000 vehicles worldwide to fix Takata airbags.
