Akira Marumoto, who heads Mazda Motor Corp.’s Americas region, will take over as the company’s president and CEO on June 26.

He will succeed Masamichi Kogai, who will be elevated to chairman. The new head of Americas operations will be Kiyoshi Fujiwara, who currently heads the company’s r&d and cost reduction activities.

Kogai is credited with improving Mazda’s products and shifting new models to the company’s Skyactiv approach to lighter and better performing vehicles powered by high-tech piston engines. He also has been trying to move the brand upmarket and shift its product mix more strongly from conventional cars to SUV/crossover models.

Marumoto’s mission will be to follow through, even as it pursues partnerships to help it keep pace with the industry’s shift to electrification and self-driving technologies.
