Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Maserati unit plans to add an all-electric version of its Alfieri sports car shortly after the base model is introduced more than three years from now.
Maserati has delayed the 2+2 coupe since it was unveiled in concept form at the 2014 Geneva auto show. The vehicle now is set for a 2019/2020 introduction with the EV variant to follow about a year later, Peter Denton, the manager of Maserati's northern European arm, tells the British website just-auto.com.
The conventional Alfieri is expected to be powered by a V-8 engine. Both coupe and convertible body styles will be offered of the vehicle, which will be about the size of a Jaguar F-Type sports car and compete against that vehicle and the Porsche 911, Denton says.
The electric variant—a first for Maserati—was chosen in part over a plug-in hybrid because current tax incentives for the latter aren’t expected to continue in the future, Denton says.
