Maruti Alto Becomes India’s All-Time Best-Seller

Domestic sales of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.’s five-door mini hatch have topped 3 million units, making it India’s best-selling car ever.

Maruti Suzuki, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Co. introduced the Alto in 2000. Domestic sales reached 1 million in 2008-2009 and 2 million four years later. The model, now in its eighth generation, has been India’s top seller for more than 10 years.

Currently base-priced at about 323,000 rupees ($4,800), the 67-hp Alto is produced at Maruti Suzuki’s assembly plant in Manesar. The company also has exported about 380,000 Altos to 70 countries over the past 15 years.
