European automakers group ACEA has elected Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne to a second term as the group's president after a contentious 12 months.

Marchionne's effort to persuade the EU to coordinate a regionwide reduction in production capacity angered German carmakers, which have far less excess capacity than their French and Italian counterparts. Volkswagen AG called Marchionne "intolerable" and called for his resignation as ACEA chief.

The ACEA says Marchionne's mandate is to push for a "meaningful and supportive" EU-wide industrial policy and promoting fair trade agreements. The group traditionally elects a president from among its member companies to a one-year term with the possibility re-election for an additional year.
