Fiat SpA CEO Sergio Marchionne describes Ferrari's standing in this year's Formula One season as "unacceptable" and says Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo must deliver more wins for the team.
"Nobody is indispensable," Marchionne tells reporters. He adds that he has no plan to replace di Montezemolo, despite rampant rumors to the contrary.
Montezemolo has headed the Ferrari brand for more than two decades. But Marchionne clearly took offense at Montezemolo's recent comment to Ferrari shareholders about his "availability" to continue running the company for another three years.
Marchionne bristled at Montezemolo's implied threat that Ferrari would founder further without him, retorting that "nobody should ever get it through their head that you could threaten or suggest the house would be in trouble [without you]."
At last weekend's F1 race in Monza, Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen finished ninth, and crowd favorite Fernando Alonso dropped out with car problems. Ferrari is in fourth place in this year's constructors' championship behind Mercedes, Red Bull/Renault and Williams/Mercedes.
