Chrysler-Fiat CEO warned on Monday that the company's contract negotiations this summer with the Canadian Auto Workers union could be "difficult."
Marchionne criticized the CAW for a strike by its members at supplier Dakkota Integrated Systems, which supplies instrument panels to Chrysler's nearby minivan plant in Windsor, Ont. He told reporters he has "zero empathy" with the strikers, whom he said walked out over a minor contract issue.
If the CAW were to take the same approach with Chrysler, bargaining could be fractious, Marchionne declared.
Dakkota workers ratified a new contract a few hours later, and the minivan factory reopened after a half-day shutdown.
CAW President Ken Lewenza says he was surprised by Marchionne's aggressive tone. But he notes that Chrysler reached an agreement with the United Auto Workers union last autumn despite some inflammatory remarks by Marchionne during the talks.
