Canada’s Magna International Inc. says it is working with carmakers to make aerodynamically styled components on new vehicles.

The company is launching a visible active grille shutter system on an unnamed 2017 European-based luxury vehicle. This will be the first time the system’s louvers, which electronically open and close to deflect air, are located on the outer surface of a vehicle's grille rather than hidden behind it.

Magna’s “Actero” active aerodynamic systems use “smart” actuators that manage deployment based on inputs such as vehicle speed, temperature and drive mode. In addition to grille shutters, Magna also supplies active front deflectors and other electronically controlled aerodynamic components. The company says it has won content on 15 vehicle programs since launching the active aerodynamic line in 2012.
