Demand for luxury cars set a record-high 40,700 units in 2018, but growth slowed sharply to 3%, according to company data.

Last year’s increase compares with a 19% jump in deliveries in 2017. The sector accounts for less than 1% of India’s overall passenger vehicle market.

German brands continue to dominate the segment, contributing 80% of total volume. Sales advanced in 2018 for Mercedes-Benz (+1% to 15,500 units) and BMW (+13% to 10,400) but fell for Audi (-18% to 6,500 vehicles).

Tata Motors Ltd.’s Jaguar Land Rover unit saw combined sales rise to a record 4,600 units from 4,000 in 2017. SUV/crossovers accounted for more than half the company’s total volume last year.
