The maker of London's iconic black taxis is suing a rival that plans to introduce a similarly styled range-extended electric cab in 2016, Bloomberg News reports.
London Taxi Co. claims the new Metrocab has a similar profile that could confuse customers. Metrocab says passengers don't care who makes the vehicle.
Metrocab was developed by two units of Kamkorp Group: England's Ecotive Ltd. and Frazer-Nash Research Ltd. The seven-passenger taxi features a two-motor electric drive and onboard piston-powered generator.
Metrocab taxis, which are undergoing tests in London now, will be produced at an annual rate as great as 3,500 units in a new 50 million (€69 million) factory in Coventry.
London Taxi is owned by China's Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. Geely is completing a 250 million (€346 million) factory in Coventry to build a "green" version of its iconic diesel-powered taxi.
The city of London announced last year it will require all taxi operators in the city to switch to zero-emission vehicles by 2018.
