Ford Motor Co.’s Lincoln unit plans to rename its MKC compact crossover vehicle the Corsair when the next-generation model debuts in 2020, Automotive News reports.
Lincoln revealed the new name to its U.S. dealers at a meeting last month in Orlando, sources tell AN. The carmaker declined to comment.
Ford previously used the Corsair name on a 1960s-era sedan sold in the U.K. and an unrelated model that was marketed in Australia between 1989 and 1992.
Last November, Lincoln announced plans to phase out the MK-based naming convention that it adopted in 2006. AN notes that Corsair, the name of a pirate ship and a World War II fighter plane, fits with other Lincoln travel-related models such as Aviator, Navigator and Nautilus.
Dealers reportedly were shown the Corsair along with several other upcoming models during the Orlando meeting. A freshened version of the current MKC (pictured) is expected to be unveiled this summer as a 2019 model.
