Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus unit says its UX Concept crossover/SUV is the luxury brand’s “vision for a compact SUV of the future.”

Lexus introduced the UX, which stands for “user experience” in tech circles, on Thursday at the Paris auto show. Media reports speculate that a production version could be launched as early as next year to replace the current 200h hatchback.

The UX shares a platform with Toyota’s Prius hybrid car and upcoming C-HR subcompact crossover. Penned by Lexus’ European design center, the UX’s bold styling includes angular lines, a spindle grille and rear-hinged doors for second-row seats.

The futuristic cockpit is highlighted by 3D displays that project hologram-like images and data. A large crystal-shaped box in the center console displays climate control and infotainment data that can be viewed by the driver and front-seat passenger. A floating orb in the middle of the instrument cluster displays analog and digital information.

Other goodies include electrochromic side window glass, touch-sensitive control buttons, cameras in place of side mirrors and a removable sound bar built into the passenger-side dashboard. The concept’s kinetic seats are designed to move along with an occupant’s body to improve comfort.
