Lexus, Porsche Top JD Power 2019 Dependability Study

Lexus has retained its top rating for the eighth consecutive year in J.D. Power’s annual U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

Lexus has retained its top rating for the eighth consecutive year in J.D. Power’s annual U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.
 
Porsche and Toyota tied for second, followed by Chevrolet and Buick. Anchoring the bottom of the brand rankings this year are Ram, Dodge, Volvo, Land Rover and Fiat.

Power also named the Porsche 911 sports car as the U.S. market’s most dependable model overall, a new category for the 30-year-old study. Other model-specific winners by category are:

  • Compact sporty - Mini Cooper
  • Compact MPV - KiaSoul
  • Compact premium - Lexus ES
  • Midsize - Toyota Camry
  • Midsize sporty - Dodge Challenger
  • Midsize premium - BMW 5 Series
  • Large car - Buick LaCrosse

SUV/VAN/PICKUP

  • Small SUV - Volkswagen Tiguan
  • Small premium SUV - Audi Q3
  • Compact SUV - Chevrolet Equinox
  • Compact premium SUV - BMW X3
  • Midsize SUV - Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Midsize premium SUV - Lexus GX
  • Large SUV - Ford Expedition
  • Minivan - Chrysler Town & Country
  • Midsize pickup - Nissan Frontier

The Power study is based on feedback from owners of 3-year-old vehicles about their experience in terms of problems they report in eight areas: exterior, interior, features/controls, seats, audio/nav system, heating and cooling, powertrain and overall driving experience.

Brands and specific models are ranked according to the number of problems per 100 vehicles. Lexus had only 105; Fiat had 249.
