Toyota Motor Corp. has filed a trademark application in the U.S. to use “LQ” as the name of a future vehicle, perhaps for a new range-topping model for the carmaker’s Lexus unit.

All current Lexus vehicles use a two-letter naming convention. This includes top-end L-series models—such as the LS sedan, LC coupe and LX crossover—with the second letter signifying the body style.

Lexus hasn’t used “Q” in any current or previous vehicles. The brand’s current crossover/SUV lineup is notated by an “X,” as in its LX, NX and RX models.

The LQ badge could be used for a more upscale crossover than the rugged LX, Motor Authority suggests. The website points to the stylish LF-1 Limitless concept model (pictured), which was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, as a possible precursor to a future Lexus LQ.
