Lexus GX SUV Adds Tech, Off-Road Features

Toyota Motor Corp. is giving its aging Lexus GX 460 SUV a makeover with upgraded driver-assists and off-road features for the 2020 model year.

The current generation model, which was introduced in 2010, shares a ladder-frame platform with the international market Land Cruiser Prado SUV. A full redesign is due early next decade.

Highlighting the styling tweaks are an even larger spindle grille and redesigned triple-beam LED headlights. The optional Sport Design package adds a unique lower grille surround, rear valence, accents on the side mirrors, matte black exhaust tip and 19-inch gunmetal gray wheels.

The Lexus Safety System+ is now standard across all GX 460 models. The package features automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights and adaptive cruise control. An adaptive variable suspension system is optional.

A new off-road package includes crawl control for low-speed maneuvers, active traction control, and downhill and hill-start assist. A Multi-Terrain Select feature enables drivers to tailor wheel spin control to driving surfaces such as mud, sand and rocks. Other equipment includes a transmission cooler and fuel tank protector.

Multiple cameras are used to display views from around, within and even under the vehicle. Occupants can choose which views to display and/or record.

The standard engine remains a 4.6-liter V-8 that generates 301-hp, with 329 lb-ft or torque and 6,500 lbs of towing capacity. The engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission and Torsen limited-slip center differential. A two-speed transfer case provides four-wheel drive.
