A lawsuit filed in New York City on Tuesday seeks compensation for 658 plaintiffs with claims of injuries or deaths linked to cars General Motors Co. has recalled to fix faulty ignition switches.
GM has issued callbacks this year for nearly 15 million vehicles with various ignition switch problems. The new lawsuit aims to cover claims beyond those linked to GM's initial 2.6 million-car recall.
The company will begin next month to compensate members of the latter group through a program set up and run by disaster payment expert Kenneth Feinberg. GM has identified 54 crashes and 13 fatalities tied to ignition switches in that group.
Claims by the new plaintiffs reportedly include crashes where the airbags deployed. One of the key tests for eligibility in Feinberg's program is evidence that the airbags did not deploy.
