A group of major global maritime transporters of vehicles are being sued in U.S. court in Florida on allegations that they participated in a five-year scheme to fix or inflate international shipping charges.
The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, claims that the extra cost was absorbed by automakers and passed on to car buyers.
Houston, Tex.-based law firm Susman Godfrey LLP, filed the case, apparently on behalf of American consumers. The firm says the lawsuit stems from international anti-trust investigations of the carriers by authorities in Europe, Japan and the U.S.
