Volkswagen AG’s Lamborghini unit is considering several potential options to expand its lineup to four vehicles but doesn’t plan to act until the mid-2020s.

The ultra-luxury marquee currently makes the top-end Aventador and Huracan sports cars and recently added the Urus, its first crossover/SUV. The latter is expected to double the carmaker’s volume to 7,000 units by the end of this year and raise sales to as many as 8,000 units in 2019.

That’s enough growth for now, Lamborghini boss Stefano Domenicali tells Autocar, adding that, “You cannot triple” sales in two years.

Instead, Domenicali says the company needs to adopt a “new mentality” to manage its current portfolio. The near-term focus will be on stability, he adds.

Among the vehicles being evaluated for the future are a front-engine GT with 2+2 seating, a production version of the 2008 Estoque sedan and a third mid-engine model to complement the Aventador and Huracan. Domenicali says a decision won’t be made until more market research is done.

But support for the mid-engine car is said to be growing, due in part to reports that sister company Audi plans to discontinue its R8 supercar after 2020. Noting that the Huracan shares a platform with the R8, Autocar says it would help justify a future stand-alone Lamborghini platform if multiple vehicles used it.
