Kiekert Readies New Door Technologies

Germany’s Kiekert AG says it working with carmakers on 20 latch development programs that could lead to series production in coming years.
The list includes the company’s E-Latch electric door-locking system due next year in an unspecified vehicle, according to the supplier. Other companies already offer similar devices.
Kiekert estimates its system could save an average of about 300 grams per door on a midsize car—depending on the level of redundancy specified by the carmaker—by replacing various mechanical mechanisms. Other purported benefits include an improved feel and less force needed to open and close the door. The system also would enable carmakers to eliminate traditional door handles, which would boost interior space and allow for greater design flexibility.
Kiekert also has developed an LED-Latch light that’s integrated into the door opening. The patented system is lighter and more effective than existing reflectors and door warning lights. according to the company. It says the technology is ready for commercial applications, but it has yet to land a customer.
Another technology, called i-protect, is expected to debut by 2020. The electromechanical system uses an object-detection sensor and a special door brake to help protect car doors from striking objects as they are opened.
Kiekert, which claims to have 25% of the global side door latch business, is investing $1 million to expand its Wixom, Mich., manufacturing facility. The 15,000-sq-ft addition will nearly triple the plant's production capacity of door-latch modules to more than 1 million units this year.
