Kia Motors Corp. is preparing to recall 377,100 of its 2011-2013 model Sorento crossover vehicles in the U.S. that could roll away when parked with the engine running.
An interlock normally prevents the vehicle from being shifted out of Park unless the brake is pressed. But Kia says the interlock can chip or break if too much force is applied to the gearshift lever.
The company reports three injuries an 54 warranty claims related to the flaw, which first came to its attention in August when a customer’s attorney advised the company of the problem.
Kia dealers will replace the brake-shift interlock mechanism when the recall begins in late November. In the meantime, the company advises owners to use the parking brake before leaving their vehicles.
