Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. has won a 3-year-old lawsuit against Jiangling Motors Corp. that accused the Chinese company of selling a vehicle that copied several design features of the Range Rover Evoque SUV.

A Beijing district court agreed with JLR’s claim in 2016 that Jiangling’s original Landwind X7 directly copied five unique features of the Evoque (pictured). The two vehicles have a similar shape, with a tapering roofline, and nearly identical taillights and side panel lines.

Jiangling was ordered to cease all sales, manufacturing and marketing of the first-generation X7 that was introduced in 2014. Jiangling can continue to sell the redesigned version of the X7 that was launched more recently.

JLR was awarded unspecified compensation from Jiangling. The British marque, which is owned by India’s Tata Group, hailed the decision as the first trademark infringement victory for a foreign carmaker in China.

JLR plans to begin China sales of the redesigned Evoque next month, following its introduction in other markets late last year.
