Jaguar Land Rover's new JustDrive system will enable operators of its 2015 models to use voice commands to access and use Apple or Android phones and an array of 18 apps.
JustDrive was developed by CloudCar, a California-based software company that specializes in connected-car services.
JLR announced the application ahead of the Los Angeles auto show. The carmaker also used the occasion to note it has opened its first overseas R&D center a $3 million facility in Portland, Ore. to create new connected-car and infotainment products.
JustDrive is designed to act as a smartphone-based single control hub for JLR's new InControl Apps system. Among other things, the combo can be used to search the driver's smartphone for music, operate the car's navigation system and access such Internet services as Spotify and Twitter.
The system uses a USB connection to access data in the phone and a Bluetooth wireless connection for hands-free phone calls.
JLR will begin rolling out the JustDrive in January in all 2014-2015 Jaguar cars and Land Rover SUVs fitted with the InControl system.
