Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is suing Jiangling Motors Corp. for copyright infringement and unfair competition, claiming the exterior of the Chinese carmaker's Landwing X7 SUV is a virtual copy of JLR's Range Rover Evoque, Reuters reports.
JLR confirms it has filed a lawsuit over copyright and unfair competition in a Beijing court. Jiangling Motors has declined to comment.
The Evoque debuted in concept form as the LRX in 2008 and went on sale in July 2010. Jiangling unveiled the lookalike Landwind X7, which costs about one-third as much, in November 2014. The X7 prompted immediate criticism over the obvious similarity in its appearance to the distinctive Evoque. JLR said at the time it would consider legal action.
Jiangling has already agreed to not sell the X7 in Brazil and is in talks with JLR about design limitations for the next X7, an unnamed source tells Reuters. In China the X7 sells for about one-third of the price of the Evoque, which JLR began producing locally there last year.
