Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is preparing to update faulty airbag software in 61,800 of its 2012-2015 model Ranger Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs in the U.S.
The flaw could stop passenger-side airbags from inflating when they should. JLR says the software may incorrectly categorize a lightweight adult as a child and order the airbag not to deploy.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports no injuries caused by the defect. The agency says JLR plans to begin the callback in mid-April.
A similar performance flaw prompted JLR last autumn to recall 40,600 of its 2010-2015 model Range Rover Evoque SUVs. In that case, a defective memory chip in the airbag control module could disable the front passenger's airbag.
