Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is recalling 40,100 cars and SUVs equipped with electronic instrument displays that may intermittently go blank.

The campaign covers certain Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles produced during the 2016-2018 model years and sold in the U.S. and Canada.

Affected vehicles are 2017 model Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs. Also included are Jaguar 2016-2017 model XJ large sedans, 2017-2018 XF midsize sedans and F-Pace crossovers, and 2018 XE small sedans.

The flaw is in the thin-film transistor IP, also called the virtual instrument cluster. The display, which normally shows vehicle speed and other operating data, may intermittently black out for 7 seconds, then reset itself while the vehicle is moving.

JLR plans to begin notifying owners in mid-December. Dealers will fix the problem with a major software update.

When Honda announced the first-generation Ridgeline in 2005, it opened the press release describing the vehicle: “The Honda Ridgeline re-defines what a truck can be with its true half-ton bed payload capability, an interior similar to a full-size truck and the exterior length of a compact truck.” And all that said, people simply couldn’t get over the way there is a diagonal piece, a sail-shaped buttress, between the cab and the box.
