Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s next-generation Defender SUV due by 2021 will debut a modular chassis that will carry two other models during the following three years.
JLR intends to eventually move almost all its cars and SUVs to the new “modular longitudinal platform.” The MLP architecture, which will be fully deployed by 2025, can accommodate conventional, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains.
The company currently markets 13 car and SUV model nameplates. By 2024 the number will grow to 16, and half of JLR’s overall volume will ride on the MLP chassis. That proportion will reach nearly 100% by 2026, according to JLR.
