Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit plans to open a $160 million R&D facility in 2016 that will be devoted to electric vehicles and connected-car technology. Construction will begin a year from now.

Called the National Automotive Innovation Campus, the center will be located at Warwick University in central England. The facility is expected to employ about 1,000 academics and engineers.

JLR will invest $80 million with the remainder coming from Tata Motors European Technical Center, Warwick Manufacturing Group and the British government's Higher Education Funding Council.
