Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is developing a “sensory steering wheel” system that could supplement audio and visual driver alerts.

The thermal-based technology, which aims to keep a driver’s eyes on the road while minimizing distractions, could quickly heat and cool parts of the steering wheel to indicate upcoming turns, lane changes and intersections.

JLR envisions the system being used during low-visibility conditions and to help the transition between driver control and autonomous vehicle operation.

Thermal cues also could be used for non-urgent notifications that don't require more intrusive audio or vibration alerts, the carmaker adds. Examples include navigational points of interest and initial low-fuel warnings.

JLR is developing the technology in partnership with Scotland’s Glasgow University.
