The 2017 Jeep Wrangler will offer light-emitting-diode headlights as part of a $600 option that also includes LED fog lights.
The application is Fiat Chrysler’s first use of LED headlights in North America. The company says the LED units will provide 63% more light than the SUV’s current halogen bulbs on low beam and as much as 90% more on high beam, while drawing 67% less power. The LED array can be fitted in the same circular openings used for the halogen bulbs.
The Wrangler's halogen headlights received a “poor” rating in the latest safety assessment by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The lights provide “inadequate” low- and high-beam illumination and excessive glare for oncoming traffic, according to the IIHS tests.
