Jeep plans to exhibit at the Tokyo auto show in October, marking the first time since 2007 that an American brand has participated in the event, Automotive News reports.

Ford, General Motors and Chrysler continue to shun the show, which is held every other year, largely because Japan remains a microscopic market for imports. Jeep, with 2,300 sales there in January-April, outsold Ford and GM combined during the period, according to AN.

Jeep's return is driven primarily by the desire of owner Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV to establish the iconic SUV maker as a global brand.
