Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Jeep brand will add a pickup truck based on the next-generation Wrangler SUV after that vehicle is introduced in late 2017, company officials told reporters at last week’s Detroit auto show. More details are expected to be announced later this month as part of FCA’s updated five-year plan.
Jeep has shown several concept pickups in recent years and hinted about potential production models. The last Jeep pickup was the Cherokee-based Comanche that was discontinued in 1992.
Jeep brand head Mike Manley also confirms the company is planning to offer FCA’s 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 engine in the Grand Cherokee SRT by the end of 2017.
In the Dodge Challenger and Charger cars, the supercharged Hellcat produces 707 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. If those ratings are maintained, the Hellcat-powered Grand Cherokee would be the most powerful SUV in the world.
