Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Alfa Romeo unit plans to offer a compact crossover vehicle based on the Jeep Compass (below), Automotive News Europe reports.

The new model, which will be positioned below the midsize Stelvio crossover in Alfa Romeo’s lineup, will include a plug-in hybrid variant, according to the report. The Jeep-based crossover will be built at FCA’s plant in Pomigliano, Italy, as part of the carmaker’s €5 billion ($5.7 billion) plan to add 13 new or updated models in Italy and improve utilization of its Italian facilities.

The investment includes adding production of the Compass at FCA’s Melfi plant, which already builds the Jeep Renegade. An electric version of the Fiat 500 minicar will be manufactured at Mirafiori.

FCA’s Cassino plant will produce a midsize crossover for Maserati based on the Stelvio. An electric variant of the Maserati Alfieri sports car also is said to be on tap for the brand’s Modena factory. Facelifts and plug-in hybrid variants are due for the Ghibili and Quattroporte sedans and Levante SUV, which are built at two plants in Turin.
