Japan Orders Recall for 7 Million Takata Airbag Inflators

Japan’s transport ministry has ordered carmakers to add 7 million vehicles to existing recalls to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators.
The order boosts the number of such devices being recalled in Japan to nearly 20 million. As with similarly expanded campaigns in the U.S., the new callbacks in Japan will encompass all inflators built with a propellant that doesn’t include a drying agent.
The Takata inflators can deteriorate after lengthy exposure to high temperature and humidity. Initial recalls centers on vehicles located in such climates, but the new U.S. and Japanese initiatives cover inflators in all environments.
