Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s Jaguar unit is evaluating the potential of a second sports car to complement the current F-Type two-seater.
The carmaker will continue to “invest in sports cars,” Hanno Kirner, who oversees Jaguar’s product strategy, tells Autocar. He points to the F-Type’s success but says the company hasn’t determined whether future projects will involve a variant of that vehicle, an all-new model or something else.
Any new model would likely share a platform with the next-generation F-Type, which is due to be replaced within the next two years. Kirner says he’s in favor of a flexible architecture that could be used for a wide variety of vehicles.
Kirner's comments follow similar ones made last year by Jaguar design chief Ian Callum. At the time, Callum hinted about reviving the brand’s XK nameplate, which was discontinued in 2014, with a 2+2 model.
A new sports car likely wouldn’t be launched until at least 2021, Autocar says. Kirner says the company also is studying the potential of a hybrid or all-electric electric sports car to build on the success of the E- and F-Pace electric crossover vehicles.
