Italy's Ministry of Economic Development says it will set up a task force to study ways to help ease the country's automotive "crisis."
The panel will propose industrial policies to revitalize, protect and expand that business, according to the ministry. It says the task force was suggested by trade group ANFIA, which represents Italy's makers of cars, commercial vehicles, buses and parts.
Economic Development Minister Flavio Zanonato tells reporters he plans to discuss such strategies at a meeting on Aug. 1 with CEO Sergio Marchionne of Fiat SpA, which is Italy's largest private-sector employer. Zanonato says the session might include other automotive executives.
The ministry says its panel will be similar to the U.K.'s automotive council, which includes representatives of carmakers and government. That group's goals include encouraging investment in the industry and promoting the development of new technologies.
