Isuzu Motors Ltd. plans to introduce its first high-volume electric commercial truck next year.

Based on the company’s N-Series midsize models, the low cab forward truck is expected to have a range of 100 km (62 miles) per charge of its lithium-ion batteries. Isuzu envisions the vehicle being used for such jobs as local trash pickup and short-range deliveries.

Isuzu is presenting the electric truck this week at the Tokyo auto show. The company has not indicated its sales targets but says it is targeting logistics companies and retailers, encouraging them to try the truck and help Isuzu make it more cost effective.

The model will compete in the same 5.9-ton class as Isuzu’s less expensive diesel-powered N-Series trucks. The Nikkei says the company aims to build volume and reduce costs so fleet operators eventually will be able to recoup upfront costs within five years of operation.
