Ford Motor Co. and Intel Corp. are researching in-car camera systems that use facial recognition software to recognize the driver and adjust the seat, interior temperature and other vehicle control settings accordingly.
Ford notes that such a capability also would enable parents to set speed limits, require seatbelt use, put a ceiling on audio volume and limit cellphone usage. The same technology could be used to verify authorized drivers and lock the ignition if a thief, even one with a proper ignition key, attempt to start the engine.
Ford notes the system also could be used by a smartphone app to remotely inspect the interior for personal belongings or authorize a new driver.
Adding gesture-recognition software would enable drivers to couple voice commands with simple gestures to operate the sunroof or adjust cabin temperature.
Ford and Intel are exploring such possibilities in a continuing joint research project called Project Mobil. Their goal is to integrate interior-facing cameras with other sensor and data already generated in and around the vehicle.
