The purchase adds lidar—laser-based radar—capabilities to Infineon's existing expertise in making chips for radar and camera systems. All three types of sensors are required to enable fully automated vehicles.
Infineon says Innoluce will help it develop new chip components for high-performance lidar systems with the goal of making lidar. The goal used to detect small objects, an affordable feature for vehicles in all price ranges, according to the companies.
Last year Infineon sold a record €2.4 billion ($2.6 billion) in chips for cars. The company controls about 10% of the global automotive semiconductor market.
