Production from Germany's factories, mines and utilities, which dipped 0.2% from October to November, rose 0.3% in December, according to the country's National Statistics Institute.

Economists say the overall figure was dragged down by a weather-related 9% drop the German construction sector. Manufacturing output climbed 1.2%, including a 1.9% advance in production of durable goods such as autos and appliances.

But industrial output in Germany in the October-December period fell 3% from the previous three months. Economists say the decline could contribute to an expected fourth-quarter contraction in the country's economy.

Separately, the U.K Office for National Statistics reports that the country's industrial production grew 1.1% month over month in December. Manufacturing activity expanded 1.6% from November to December. Year on year, those measures were down 1.7% and 1.5%, respectively
