The impact of widespread flooding earlier this month will hurt car production in India into at least January, according to the Society of India Automobile Manufacturers.

The flooding began in late November when three times the normal rainfall pelted the Chennai region for two weeks. The area, often described as “India’s Detroit,” accounts for more than one-third of India’s entire vehicle output, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC.

BMW, Ford, Nissan and Renault all reported lost production caused by the floods earlier this month. They have since resumed operations. But PwC tells Bloomberg News there will be “significant” impact on car sales for many weeks as the region’s supply base struggles to return to normal.
