Hyundai Motor Co.’s Hyundai Autron subsidiary and Alameda, Calif.-based Wind River Systems Inc. plan to co-develop a streamlined software platform for advanced vehicle technologies.

Using technology from both companies, the new platform promises to provide a framework for integrating controllers and sensors used in emerging autonomous and connected vehicle systems. This includes Ethernet-based communication and artificial intelligence applications, according to the partners.

The platform will run on Wind River’s VxWorks real-time operating system and leverage “hypervisor” portioning technology to allow various vehicle systems—including safety- and non-safety-critical devices—to share common control hardware. Such partitioning improves reliability, flexibility, redundancy and cost effectiveness, the companies say.

Formed in 2012, Hyundai Autron specializes in electronic control systems, processors, sensors and software. The company has developed systems for Hyundai, Kia Motors, Hyundai Mobis and non-affiliated companies worldwide.
