Hyundai Will Recall 470,000 Sonata Sedans in U.S.

Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing to recall 2011-2012 model Sonata midsize sedans in the U.S. to inspect and perhaps replace major engine components.
The 470,000 affected cars, all built at the company's plant in Montgomery, Ala., are equipped with 2.0- or 2.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engines.
Metal particles may have been introduced into the engine by crankshafts whose oil passages were not properly flushed after machining and ahead of engine assembly, according to the company. The particles could clog oil passages to the connecting rod bearings, resulting in premature bearing wear and possible engine failure.
The company notes that premature wear could produce a knocking noise from the engine and/or cause the engine warning lamp to illuminate.
Dealers will inspect and replace engine blocks and bearings as needed. Hyundai also is extending the warranty on the engine block to 10 years or 120,000 miles. The company will notify owners of the problem in November, but it doesn't expect to have enough components available to launch the recall until an unspecified later date.
