Hyundai Motor Co. is recalling 580,100 of its 2011-2013 Sonata midsize cars, including hybrid models made in 2011- 2012, in the U.S.

The campaign expands a callback of 154,800 of the company’s 2011 model Sonatas that began at the end of February. Last month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into other models that might be affected.

NHTSA says that a crash could short circuit the air bag control unit in affected cars, thereby switching off the front and side airbags and seatbelt pretensioners before they can deploy. The agency implicates the flaw in four deaths and six injury crashes.

Hyundai began notifying owners about the problem last week. But it says a reliable remedy is still being developed.
