Hyundai Motor Group has appointed its chairman’s son as chief vice chairman, thus moving him closer to succeeding his 80-year-old father as head of the giant conglomerate.

Chung Eui-sun, 47, will oversee group operations and help his father Chung Mong-Koo to confront “deteriorating global trade issues and changes in competitive dynamics,” according to the company.

The younger Chung has been vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Co. since 2009.
