The Hydrogen Council—a global coalition aimed at advancing and promoting hydrogen technologies, standards and policies—is adding 14 members.

Eight companies are joining the consortium’s steering group: Airbus, Air Products, Cummins, EDF, Johnson Matthey, KOGAS, SINOPEC and Thyssenkrupp. The six others are joining as supporting members: AFC Energy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Re-Fire Technology, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, Sumitomo and Southern California Gas.

Since its launch at the World Economic Forum 18 months ago, the council has more than quadrupled in size and now consists of 53 global companies from 11 countries. Existing automotive-related steering group members include Audi, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, Faurecia, General Motors, Great Wall Motor, Honda, Hyundai, Total and Toyota.

The next annual meeting will take place during the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco next week. Top executives from Council member companies will present a progress report on the group’s work at the meeting.

The group’s first report, Scaling Up, envisions a $2.5 trillion annual market for hydrogen and fuel cell equipment by 2050. Some 30 million people are expected to be employed in the industry by that time.
