Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid SUV became the first vehicle to reach the Heaven’s Gate summit atop China’s Tianmen Mountain.
The trek covered seven miles of winding roads, including 99 turns, before culminating in a climb up a 45° staircase over 999 steps to the scenic Heaven’s Gate rock arch. The nearly 5,000-ft peak is surrounded by clouds and boasts the world’s highest cave elevation.
Ho-Pin Tung, who races for the Panasonic Jaguar Formula E electric vehicle team, piloted the Range Rover Sport PHEV up the mountain. The vehicle also has scaled Pike’s Peak in Colorado, traversed the “empty quarter” desert in the Arabian Peninsula and descended the legendary 7,100-ft Inferno course in Switzerland.
Teaming a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, the Range Rover Sport makes a combined 414 hp. The SUV’s 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery provides an all-electric range of 30 miles.
