Honda Motor Co. has disclosed its first recall to replace faulty airbag inflators from Takata Corp. came in 2002.
The campaign involved a small number of 2000 model Honda Accord and Acura TL sedans with improperly welded Takata inflators installed in the passenger's frontal airbag system.
The 6 million cars Honda has recalled in the U.S. more recently target a newer inflator design with a different propellant that can misfire when exposed to moisture. But both flaws pose the same danger: The inflator can explode, spraying shrapnel into the passenger compartment.
