Honda Motor Co. is developing a wireless system that would allow electrified vehicles to be recharged while driving on roads at speeds as great as about 100 mph.
The company notes that the so-called dynamic charging could provide a virtually unlimited driving range for EVs traveling over an embedded road. Dynamic charging requires charging hardware to be embedded into or over the road, Honda notes. It describes the system as an invisible train tracks for EVs.
Honda says the system will provide 180 kW of charging power from a 500-volt DC power outlet. At least twice the charging power—400 kW—would be necessary to support wireless recharging for heavy-duty trucks, the carmaker estimates.
Company researchers will present a report that details the results of recent tests and identifies opportunities and challenges related to the technology at SAE World Congress (dubbed WCX 17 this year) in Detroit on April 4-6. The new study is a follow-up to a 2015 paper Honda presented at the 2015 World Congress.
