Honda Motor Co. is preparing a global recall of its 2007-2008 Odyssey minivans because they may spontaneously apply their own brakes without driver input.

Honda says about 344,000 of the 381,000 vehicles were sold in the U.S. The recall follows an investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that began in June.

The campaign, which won't begin until March, follows a worldwide recall in March to fix a similar phenomenon in 250,000 of its 2005 model Acura MDX and Honda Pilot crossovers and Acura RL sedans.

Honda says both problems stem from malfunctions of the vehicles' electronic stability control system. In the case of the new recall, the system allows brake pressure to build up and be released suddenly into the brake system, according to the company.

NHTSA says the resulting unexpected strong braking occurs without the driver pressing the brake pedal, and it does not illuminate the brake lights.
